Book Fruits
Teaching Associate
Book Fruits, a nonprofit literary and educational organization, seeks intern Teaching Associates.
Teaching Associates co-teach weekly writing workshops. And these writing workshops really work. They see new writers dancing with the joy of putting words to paper. They see unenthusiastic students alight with the excitement of knowing their writing matters.
The good work we do is possible because of the ingenuity and dedication of our Teaching Associates. Book Fruits' Teaching Associates have found leading a workshop to be a rewarding, challenging way of giving back to the community.
Teaching Associates contribute approximately 10 hours weekly, two to three of which are spent in the workshops. The remainder is spent preparing for and reviewing each session. A commitment of January 5 through May 30 (with a two-week break in March) is required. Training is provided. Location and schedule are flexible. A small transportation stipend is available.
Our search is for Associates who are creative, responsive, and dedicated. Associates typically, although not always, have some experience either teaching or working with underserved populations.
The children in our writing workshop programs are fun, charming, funny children. Unfortunately, they are too often disconnected from language. Book Fruits aims to change that.
To apply for the Teaching and Research internship, please send a current résumé to recruit@bookfruits.org with the words "Teaching and Research" in the subject line. Please call 202.338.1934 with inquiries. The selection process is open until December 12, but prompt applications are appreciated.

Fairfax Court Appointed Advocates (CASA)
Writing Internship
Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a nonprofit organization located in Fairfax City, seeks a writing intern to assist the Recruitment and Training Manager with a number of projects, including:
-- Interviewing 12 volunteers and writing short "spotlight" articles about them for the monthly volunteer e-newsletter.
-- Assisting in writing and editing other articles for the e-newsletter.
-- Updating/revising Standard Operating Policies.
-- Assisting with writing assignments related to the recruitment and training of volunteers.
-- Assisting with some administrative tasks, such as compiling volunteer information packets and preparing volunteer training manuals.
To learn more, contact Elisa Kosarin, Recruitment and Training Manager, at 703-273-3526, ext. 22 or ekosarin@casafairfax.org.
About Fairfax CASA:
Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) recruits, screens, trains and supervises citizen volunteers who are then empowered by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to advocate for the best interests of children who have been the victims of abuse and neglect. Fairfax CASA works on an automatic referral basis from the Fairfax County Court to ensure that children are placed in safe, permanent and loving homes in as short a timeframe as possible. The organization serves more children than any other CASA program in the Commonwealth of Virginia or in the DC metropolitan area. It is the only organization in Fairfax County authorized by the Court to provide advocacy services for children brought into the legal system because of abuse or neglect. Additionally, the Fairfax County Court has mandated that every case entering its system be referred to Fairfax CASA for the timely assignment to a volunteer. This mandate means that Fairfax CASA must continually recruit and train new volunteers to keep pace with the number of children entering the juvenile protection system.
Comments from the Coordinator:
A Mason English major had a very good experience at CASA last spring. CASA has a very strong volunteer training program, and it seems as though this expertise also supports their internship program.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) was founded in 1893. The IACP is the largest policing association in the world with over 20,000 members in approximately 105 different countries. IACP membership consists of mostly command-level staff (captain and above), mostly police chiefs but also researchers, academics and professors.
The Research Center mission is to identify issues in law enforcement and conduct timely policy research, evaluation, follow-up training and technical assistance on those issues to provide information and direction to law enforcement leaders, the justice system, and the community.
Students are primarily assigned to different projects within the Research Center Directorate while 1 student is assigned to our Police Chief Magazine Division http://www.policechiefmagazine.org/
Within the RCD, students are assigned to a senior staff member and immersed in a specific project for the duration of the internship. The staff member serves as both supervisor and mentor to the student. Each semester, students are given several assignments that require them to work together as a team, in addition to working on their individual projects assigned by their supervisors. Individual student and group assignments allow the students to learn to work independently and collectively, and improve their time management skills. Some of the projects past interns have worked on within the IACP include: "Violence Against Women," "Gun Violence Reduction," "New Police Chief Mentoring," "Cutting Edge of Technology," and others.
The Police Chief, the official publication of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), was started in 1933 and continues to be the professional voice of law enforcement. This monthly magazine has a print circulation of approximately 23,000 and is also available online. Articles are of interest not only to police executives but also to anyone interested in law enforcement practices in such areas as leadership, management, personnel, ethics, and trends. Monthly editorial features include such topics as communications technology, highway safety, homeland security, and identity theft.
Police Chief Interns have the opportunity to research topics of interest to contributors and the editorial staff, as well as to learn about the publishing process. Tasks have included compiling research notebooks for editorial features/topics, collaborating with other IACP interns on project proposals, maintaining correspondence with potential contributors, and assisting in managing the manuscript log. Interns that work in the Police Chief division also assist with the planning of the IACP annual Conference; a massive event with worldwide participation organized a year in advance.
The IACP's Student Intern Program is designed to maximize the student's opportunity to learn about justice policy issues and various other issues facing law enforcement across the U.S. To help address these issues, the IACP is committed to providing assistance to law enforcement agencies through research, training, and technical assistance. Interns assist us in our efforts through their research and policy work, making them a valuable asset to the IACP and specifically the Research Center Directorate. We also provide our interns with hands-on experience by allowing them to attend and participate in law enforcement policy-making meetings and go on ride-alongs with local police departments in the area.

Comments from the Coordinator:
This was a very good fall internship for one of our students. I'd describe it as demanding but rewarding. The expectations are high: successful interns will be capable writers and researchers and motivated learners. The internship can be an audition for a full-time position on the Hill. The sponsor prefers interns who can commit up to 30 hours a week but is willing to be flexible; some interns work 10 - 15 hours. The previous intern is willing to share information with prospective applicants; contact me (slawrenb@gmu.edu) for her address.
